Chess Board

I still can't believe the chess board is set up with line symmetry instead of point symmetry.

I am pretty sure it has both. It would have line symmetry diagonally and point symmetry from the center. Right? Or am I missing something here?

First of all, awesome picture.

If you're talking about the board itself, yes it has both. What I am surprised about is the way the pieces are set up on it to start a game. Because the board has point symmetry about its center like you said, I think the pieces should too. If, for example, both queens started on white and both kings on black, I would be happy, but the standard setup gives the pieces line symmetry through the middle of the battlefield.

And, imagine chess boxing. In the likely case that both boxers are right handed they too have point symmetry through the center. Only on the less likely case of lefty vs righty does the queen on her own color convention have a decent argument.

1. Gotcha.
2. From my extensive knowldge bank that is always 100% accurate, Wikipedia, I have some info that may help calm you down. The original game that was developed in India was called Chaturaá¹…ga. This game looks identical to the game we play today expcept for one major difference, the kings and queens were on the same color as their counterparts instead of lining up across from them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_chess
3. Are you going to chess box me as a southpaw or a righty? We need to settle this before our bout next year. I am already training!

Thanks, that actually helps a lot. What hand I box with will be determined by what configuration our royalty starts in. I vote for the Indian way.
