This was the best running day I've had in a really long time. 5k was 20:30ish beating my 21:00 goal. 10 was 44:00ish beating my 50:00 goal, and my original 45:00 goal that I decided was unrealistic. I pushed hard in the 5k, and picked people off the whole time climbing from 10th to 5th. Then I missed a turn and two dude passed me and I had to get them again. I didn't plan to push hard during to 10k, but there were some people just hanging in front of me so I decided I better get them. And then more people started coming back to me. Then I realized I was getting a good time and decided to keep the pace. At the end I realized I could potentially challenge a guy and imagined the cross country girls telling me to "reel him in". So I started pushing. Had a minor motivational setback when I realized there was more of the course remaining than I had expected, but still caught up to him. I challenged with a firm but maintainable pace. Whenever he tried to pickup the pace I stayed steady and he quickly settled back to my pace. When I picked it up he went with me, but I never eased up again. I just kept building and eventually he broke. |

I feel good because I kept pushing the whole time, successfully got myself to only think about the next stage of the loop, and took a big bite off my time, but I also realized that that is still over about 20:30 pace for a 5k, and even though I was still pushing throughout the loop, there were parts, like the uphill on Foothill, where I wasn't actually going that fast or looking that strong. I guess that means I still have improvement ahead of me, but we already knew that. I'm curious whether I would be able to do my classic 400, 800, 1600, 800, 400 workout at 6:00 pace at this fitness level. Maybe I'll try it soon. But at least tomorrow will be not so hard. |

Interestingly, but times I took the tire off it was stuck very well to the rim. It felt like it had melted to the rim. Not sure what that was about. That always gets to me even when I try not to let it, and it didn't help this time that I made extra sure to get to the left side of the lane (I was turning left) so any cars turning right could easily fit beside me. He did turn right so I didn't have to worry about him running me off the road. This particular incident stuck with me a few kilometers longer than it typically would have because he called me fat which I'm sensative about these days. It ocurred to me though that if a driver ever does take it too far, it is the flip of a lever to remove my bike seat and use the post as a weapon. |

I've rolled both of my ankles since I last did any serious running. The left one was over the summer on my DC bike trip. That ankle feels fine, but my arch has been hurting ever since, and continued to be sore today. Hopefully running and stretching will get it to loosen back up. I did some serious massaging on it after the run, and it feels way better at least for now. The right one happened on or near my birthday at a trampoline park. That ankle was still a little sore and does not have good flexability. It is the same one I've rolled many many times since I was 16. I tried to stretch it, but there isn't much stretching to be done. It just moves normally until it can't move any more and pushing more makes it hurt. Instead I've resorted to massaging. Hopefully it will heal like it has in the past, but I'm finding that I don't heal well now that I'm really really old. |

But the route I had selected wasn't too conducive to running at night because it was unpaved and with my history of ankle rolling I decided to walk down park desert road. I followed along and around some rail road tracks and eventually arrived at the riverside park that I intended to reach. I hung around the river for a little while and then ran a good part of the way back. I wasn't sure exactly where I as and when I found a good place to cross the tracks back to the main road a train was stopped, so I climbed across, thought seriously about waiting to see if it would start moving and I could hitch a ride back, and eventually continued on my way walking again. The total distance I ran was a bit less than half the loop, but it was a great night for a walk too. |

The times and effective paces were as follows: 400 - 1:15 - 5:00 This time the pace was not too easy, and as you can see, I actually missed it one of the intervals. I will not lower the pace again next time, and I will probably stick with 5:20 for a little while as it was almost attainable this time, but was certainly not easy. Also, the weekly routine that I previously thought would be a good idea, may actually not be. I was going to run easy on Monday - Thursday, and do a track workout on Saturday, taking the other days off. But I now realize that that lowers my weekly mileage to around 25ish, and may keep me too fresh for the Saturday workouts. I don't want to accidentally cause an end-of-the-season-style peak. For the next one, I'll probably add an interval and hopefully hit the target pace a little better. |

I'm pretty sure it wasn't right, and the footing was loose, but the area was sweet anyway. Eventually I ran back down the west route. So, the search for the loop still isn't over. I made sure to stay under 6:00 pace which should help to bring some speed back and get me ready for my first track workout. |
